What exactly is an eBook?

An eBook is a book in electronic format, usually delivered over a computer network. It is designed to be read on a desktop or handheld computer, or alternatively, on specially designed electronic readers, such as Kindles and iPads. It can also be printed-out onto paper.

An eBook is downloaded from a webpage and stored on your computer.

What are the advantages of eBooks over ordinary ‘physical books’?

eBooks are delivered instantly, via direct download from the internet. This means you are not reliant on the postal service – there is no waiting.

As they are not mailed to you, there are NO shipping and handling charges.

eBooks are searchable and provide instantaneous access to desired topics. Simply enter the relevant word/s into the ‘search’ box on your computer screen (e.g. ‘Vin Santo’ or ‘fermentation’) and click ‘search’.

A great advantage of this electronic format is that it makes the book and its information very transportable.

eBooks can be read on portable readers which provide additional benefits. Many allow you to change the font size, read at night without a bedside light, allow you to make notes on a page and also provide auto-scrolling (the screen slowly ‘scrolls’, removing the need to tap the screen to move on to the next page).

eBooks save trees and space – you can carry your entire library on a portable reader.

Is the eBook compatible with the various ‘readers’ on the market?

Yes. In its PDF format, Secrets of Wine is compatible with virtually all PPC and Palm eBook viewers/readers. These include: Kindle, iPad, Nook, Bebook Neo, iRiver Story, Bokeen, Cooler, Elonex and Sony Reader.

Will downloading an eBook onto my reader use the majority of its storage?

No. Given the storage capacity of most electronic readers, they have the capacity to store hundreds, if not thousands of eBooks. For example, Kindle 2, with its 2GB memory will store approximately 1,500 eBooks whilst an iPad with 16GB will store approximately 12,000 eBooks!
